Protecting Our Potomac

Hi, I’m Sara Powell. I’m a Girl Scout Ambassador in the DMV area, and I created Protecting Our Potomac for my Girl Scout Gold Award. This program helps Girl Scouts learn why the Potomac River matters, what harms local waterways, how we can protect them, and how to take action through a local cleanup.

Why Potomac?

I chose to focus on the Potomac River for my Gold Award project because it is a local issue that affects everyone in the DMV area. The river is an integral part of the health of our DMV community, and it is necessary to protect it. This program helps Girl Scouts learn why the river is so important and how they can take action to protect it.

My Connection to Potomac Conservancy

Volunteer Experience

I began volunteering with Potomac Conservancy, attending cleanups and learning about the river's health firsthand.

Leadership Training

I completed Volunteer Leader Training, gaining the skills to organize and lead cleanups for Girl Scouts.

Community Action

My experience inspired me to create a program that empowers Girl Scouts to take direct action and protect the river.

Our Impact & Future

Our program is designed to empower Girl Scouts to become stewards of the Potomac River. By completing our patch program and attending cleanups, participants gain the knowledge and confidence to protect local waterways for generations to come.
